When is your phone getting Android 9.0 Pie? We asked every major manufacturer

Android 9.0 Pie is now rolling out to the Nokia 7 Plus

Alcatel told Digital Trends it had nothing to share regarding Android 9.0 Pie at the moment. We don’t expect all of its phones to get Android 9.0 Pie — after all, some of them still ship with Android Nougat. Not only that, but Alcatel’s track record with Android updates is pretty bad, so it’s hard to say whether or not anyof its phones would get Android 9.0 Pie.

The Essential Phone was one of the phones that could access the current Android 9.0 Pie open beta, and it’s also one of the first to get the consumer version of Android 9.0 Pie. The update for the Essential Phone is now available.

HMD is also on the list of beta partners for Android 9.0 Pie and it’s available specifically for the Nokia 7 Plus — which is now getting the update.
Since all HMD phones run Android One, which is a stock version of Android, we expect most, if not all, of the company’s 2018 and 2017 lineup to receive the Android 9.0 Pie update by the end of the year.

After the Honor 10 and View 10 were confirmed to be receiving some delicious Pie, it was also confirmed that the newly released Honor Play would also be receiving the eventual update for Android 9.0 Pie. A closed beta for the latest EMUI 9 running on Android 9.0 Pie has also been confirmed, but user numbers are exceptionally small at the moment.
While these are the only phones confirmed so far, the company would be remiss not to include some of its other phones in that update, so keep your peepers peeled for more update news.

HUAWEI

Huawei was a major holdout in announcing Android 9.0 Pie updates, but the company has finally confirmed that it is working on delivering Android 9.0 Pie to some of its biggest phones. The company previously announced that the P20and Mate 10 Pro would be updated, and followed up with an updated list that also included the Mate 10Mate 10 Porsche Design, and P20 Pro.
Two thousand lucky users of those phones will also be getting access to the closed beta of Huawei’s EMUI 9, with the caveat that it’s still a fairly unstable build.

Following an open beta for Android 9.0 Pie on the OnePlus, OnePlus confirmedthat it was rolling out the consumer version of the operating system is now rolling out. In July, OnePlus also announced the OnePlus 3 and 3T would also receive an update to Android 9.0 Pie. But don’t think it’ll be done quickly — OnePlus plans to update its handsets to Android 9.0 Pie in reverse-sequential order: The OnePlus 6 will be the first to be updated, while the OnePlus 3 will be last. Unfortunately, we don’t have specific dates for other phones just yet — but OnePlus has released the following statement:
“OnePlus is driven by the idea of giving people the best possible hardware and software experience and that’s why we’ve been excited about Android P for some time now, having worked closely with the Android Beta Program. We’re looking forward to bringing Android P to OnePlus 6, as well as updating OnePlus 5/5T, and OnePlus 3/3T, ensuring OnePlus users all over the world can continue to enjoy new features.”

SAMSUNG

While Samsung is probably still a fair way away from its Android 9.0 Pie update, there’s evidence that it’s working on it. As spotted by Dutch website GalaxyClub, a listing for a Galaxy S9 Plus on GFXBench shows “Android 9” as the phone’s operating system. There’s easy money on this being a Samsung test device for Android 9.0 Pie, and hopefully means that Samsung is further along than we expect for the Korean manufacturer’s usually sluggish update schedule.
We expect most Samsung flagships from the past few years to get the update — including the Galaxy S8 — and we expect that more than a few of Samsung’s midrange devices will also get the upgrade. Samsung’s problem lies in the fact that its user interface, the Samsung Experience, is heavily customized. As such it takes a lot more work on Samsung’s part to create the update.

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 9
  • Samsung Galaxy S9
  • Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus

SONY

The Android 9.0 Pie beta is available to the Sony Xperia XZ2, and as such we expect the phone to get the final version soon this fall. Sony has also confirmed to Digital Trends that the XZ2 series, XZ1 series, and Xperia XZ will get the update in the fall, with updates starting to roll out in November. Not only that, but the company also detailed that the Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra, and XA2 Premium will get the update at some point in early 2019.
Expect all the high-end models to get Android 9.0 Pie, but don’t hold out if you have a mid-range or budget Sony phone.
